Sympathetic Magic
2011, Salt fired black clay, pom poms
The Sympathetic Magic series was created in response to the amethyst mines located in Thunder Bay, Ontario where I was living in 2010-11. I came across the term "sympathetic magic" in a book about ceramics. The book was referring to idol-shaped vessels that were used to store seeds, using the magic of the idol’s image to protect the seed and future crops. I relate this term to the use of semi-precious gemstones for wellness and to the seemingly magical process of using salt to glaze the ceramic pieces during firing.
