Milkweed Pods & Preserver

2023-4

These multiples were cast using an organic burn-out process that allows a real milkweed pod to be burnt away and the cavity left by it to be filled with bronze. In contrast with using a mold to create near identical multiples, this process allows for each pod to be unique yet remain clearly part of a set. The small milkweed pods are meant to be distributed, creating an unseen network of people who encounter or own the objects. The large, hand-sculpted Mother Pod ties the multiples together as though they are seeds being released and dispersed by the breeze. Milkweed floss is buoyant in water as well as in air. During World War Two, civilians were tasked with collecting milkweed pods – six times more buoyant than cork – the waterproof fluff from inside the pods was used to stuff life jackets for soldiers. Preserver is filled with milkweed floss and conveys hope for buoyancy and resilience.
